1. NO OPENING THEORY — DIRECT TO THE MIDDLAME
Traditional chess games spend the first 10 to 20 moves playing rehearsed opening preparations. In Eternal Gambit, every match drops both players directly into an imbalanced, critical middlegame position extracted from real grandmaster conflicts and tactical vaults.
Neither player has seen the position before. Victory belongs to whoever calculates faster, discovers tactical counterplay, and handles chaos under clock pressure.
2. ATTACKER VS. DEFENDER ROLES
Positions are inherently unequal. Before play begins, roles are assigned based on the evaluation:
[ ATTACKER ]
Commands the initiative, king attack, or material surplus. Must convert the advantage cleanly without letting the defender stabilize or escape.
[ DEFENDER ]
Under immediate tactical siege or down material. Must find resilient resources, set tactical traps, hold the draw, or flip the game into a counter-attack.
3. ASYMMETRIC SCORING & ELO DYNAMICS
Because positions are not equal, the scoring system reflects positional difficulty:
- Defender Holds Draw = 1.0 Points (Full Victory): Holding an inferior position to a draw against an attacker is a tactical triumph.
- Defender Wins = 2.5 Points (Elite Bonus): Overcoming severe disadvantages and checkmating the attacker is the format's highest-scoring result.
- Attacker Clean Win = 1.3 Points (Bonus Conversion): Maintaining an evaluation above +1.0 throughout the conversion rewards clean execution.
- Attacker Draw = 0.5 Points (Failed Conversion): Allowing the defender to escape counts as a loss of advantage.
Rating is separate from points. Elo moves in ordinary, chess-sized increments — a win against an evenly matched opponent is worth about 8 points, not a dramatic swing. The format is carried in the rating by scoring the two roles differently rather than by inflating the payout: a Defender who holds a draw gains rating, while an Attacker who only draws loses it.
Three things feed the calculation: the rating gap between the players, how punishing the starting position was for your assigned role, and how complex the position is. A harder assignment pays more when you succeed and costs less when you fail.
