FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know about the asymmetric competitive format, scoring rules, and tactical debriefs.
What makes Eternal Gambit different from standard chess?
Standard chess requires memorizing dozens of opening moves before real tactical play begins. Eternal Gambit skips the opening phase completely and places both players directly into chaotic, imbalanced middlegame positions where pure calculation and strategic survival decide the winner.
How does Eternal Gambit compare to Chess.com or Lichess?
Traditional platforms focus on 50-move games from starting positions, where players repeat opening book theory. Eternal Gambit is built for tactical execution: games start in the fire with imbalanced material and initiative, asymmetric scoring for comebacks and defensive holds, and natural-language AI coaching.
How are Attacker and Defender roles assigned?
Every position has a natural evaluation asymmetry (e.g. +2.0 for White). Roles are assigned dynamically so one player acts as the Attacker (converting the advantage) while the other acts as the Defender (holding the draw or counter-attacking).
Why do Defenders get a win for drawing?
Holding an inferior, under-pressure position against an aggressive attack is one of the hardest skills in chess. In Eternal Gambit, successfully holding a draw from a worse position is recognized and rewarded as a full 1.0 point victory.
What is the daily Gatekeeper challenge?
The Gatekeeper is a daily tactical test consisting solely of forced checkmates (ranging from mate-in-2 to mate-in-5). Solvers have a 90-second decaying rating window to prove their tactical sharpness before entering the competitive arena.
Can I get the same position twice?
No player will ever receive the same position in the same role. A position can only ever reappear after at least 30 days have passed, and only if you are assigned the opposite role.
How does the AI Coach work?
After each match, our AI analysis engine (powered by Stockfish 18 NNUE and Maia neural networks) breaks down the game into a natural-language debrief. Instead of showing confusing +3.4 engine evaluations, it explains what went wrong, what tactical ideas were missed, and how the turning points unfolded in plain tactical English.
How do I train middlegames and defense on Eternal Gambit?
You can train against human operators in live matchmaking or spar against Maia AI neural bots calibrated to realistic human play styles across multiple tactical rating bands.
